Outdoorplay/AW Announce Cash Rodeo Series

Freestyle paddlers might not have to subsist on Top Ramen anymore. Online retailer OutdoorPlay.com and conservation organization American Whitewater (AW) recently announced a new Freestyle Championship Series with the largest purse for rodeo paddlers in history. As a title sponsor, OutdoorPlay.com committed more than $150,000 to the series, which will offer a $5,000 purse in Men's K-1, Women's K-1 and C-1 pro divisions at three different events throughout the season. Overall category champions at the end of the series will split an additional $7,500 purse.

"We have two goals for this series," explains AW Executive Director Rich Bowers. "First is to raise awareness and funding to protect our precious whitewater resources. Second is to raise awareness of the rapidly growing sport of freestyle kayaking and the world-class athletes who are pushing it to unimagined levels."

OutdoorPlay.com CEO John "Tree" Trujillo agrees. "In the past few years, interest in paddlesports has exploded and freestyle has reached maturity as a competitive sport," he says. "The OutdoorPlay.com Freestyle Championship Series is the perfect opportunity to help AW raise the profile of its education and conservation work, while supporting development of the sport."

Events comprising the OutdoorPlay.com Freestyle Championship Series include: Tennessee's Ocoee Whitewater Rodeo, May 19-21; Indiana's South Bend Rodeo, Aug. 19-21; and Wisconsin's Wausau Freestyle Championship, Aug. 26-27.
