Roof racks guaranteed to get your paddlecraft to the put-in

roof racks

Whether they favor a canoe, kayak or inflatable, all paddlers have one chore in common: they have to tote their boat to the water and back home again. For those driving 18-wheelers, it's no big deal--just throw open the back door, slide the boat in and slide it out again. Those driving less-roomy rigs, however, have to resort to other devices (just ask anyone who has tried to stuff a sea kayak inside a Yugo). And this means finding a way to attach boats to a roof.

No piece of paddlesports equipment is better suited for this task than roof racks--those seemingly simple devices that can quintuple the cargo-capacity of a car. Manufacturers recognize this, and have churned out as many rack possibilities as there are rivers to paddle. There are racks for canoes, racks for kayaks, racks for paddles, and probably even racks for racks. Resourceful types, of course, don't care; they'll use ropes, rugs, inner-tubes, bubble- gum, two-by-fours, welders and whatever else it takes to haul their hulls to the water. Those feeling mechanically inadequate (and having less time on their hands) are better off going with the tried and true. Luckily, roof racks exist for almost every make of shuttle rig out there, whether it's a sticker- covered Volkswagen or a Yuppie-hauling sport utility vehicle. Following are the pick of the car-topping litter.

Yakima

Arcata, Calif.-based Yakima is perhaps the best known manufacturer in the roof rack family; this is primarily due to the company's bombproof attachment towers and reliable accessories, as well as almost 20 years in the business. After fitting your vehicle for the appropriate towers, choose Yakima's round crossbars ($40/pair) in 48-, 58-, 66- or 78-inch lengths (if you go with the long bars, do your head a favor and cover the ends with tennis balls). Then move on to paddlesport components. New from Yakima are Hully Rollers ($110), easing the pain of loading sea kayaks and racing shells onto your roof. Kraton-padded wheels rock, roll and pivot to facilitate loading and conform to hull shape--then, just lock the brake and cinch down boats with heavy-duty cam-straps (included). Also in the kayak-carrying department are Kayak Stackers ($60), allowing multiple boats to be stacked on edge and cinched down against crossbars and uprights for added stability. If fiberglass is your gig, go for the TLC Saddles ($80; TLC Straps $28) which wrap up and around boat bottoms with a Kraton-padded saddle and adjust individually to fit hull curvature. For canoeists, Yakima offers the Gunwale Brackets ($40) which eliminate side to side movement of any canoe or large load. They're made from Hytrel plastic-designed to be soft and protective for fine-wood gunwales. In paddlesport accessories, don't overlook Yakima's Bow/Stern Tie Down system ($25); CrossBar Pads ($25); MultiMounts for carrying oars and paddles ($20); and, of course, Yakima's Heavy Duty Straps with plastic buckle protectors ($15). Yakima offers a one-key locking system and several varieties of cable locks. Info.: (707) 826-8000 or www.yakima.com

Thule Sweden

Thule is the European-made leader in roof rack systems. Square crossbars distinguish Thule products from its competitors, and its various Foot Components fit virtually every vehicle. Crossbars ($38) are available in 50-, 58-, 65-, and 78-inch lengths. New for paddlers from Thule is the H2Go Kayak Saddle Carrier ($99), with a three-angle position adjustment to fit a variety of hull sizes. It features padded cradles and a modified mounting design to make securing boats simple and reliable. Pairs of 15-foot straps with new Buckle Bumpers (rubber bumpers that slide over cam buckles for protection) are available for $22. The bumpers also hold the buckle and strap in place and allow you to crank them down tight. Other paddler-friendly accessories from Thule include the Kayak Stacker and Canoe Carrier. Canoe Carriers ($66 with straps) are tough, padded L-shaped cradles for maximum gunwale protection and stability on your racks. The Kayak Stacker ($79 with one set of straps) is for carrying whitewater kayaks upright on the crossbars and folds down when not in use. Thule recommends carrying one boat on each side of the stacker, but we have seen up to eight boats secured with these and other rack-mounted uprights (see the manufacturer's maximum weight recommendation). Lastly, for big-boat enthusiasts, is the new Outrigger ($39.95)-a retractable extension bar that aids in loading and unloading unwieldy canoes and kayaks (compatible with round bars). All Thule components feature a one-key system, except for the company's Cable Lock ($25) which comes with its own key. Info.: (203) 881-9600 or www.thuleracks.com

Barrecrafters

Shelburne, Vt.'s Barrecrafters manufactures a full line of sport accessory racks, and is something of an unsung hero in the rack world-having been in business for over 50 years. Barrecrafters prides itself on consumer value, strength and user-friendly simplicity. For paddlesports, you'll need to begin with the Multisport Bar Racks ($160)-including oval-shaped galvanized steel bars (53, 65 or 78 inches), four mounts, and two sets of attachment hooks for internal and external rain gutters. The mounts feature locks, Kraton pads and a five-year warranty. In accessories, Barrecrafters offers the Canoe Kit ($50) which includes four L-shaped PVC gunwale supports, two "friction-fit" PVC paddle holders and six-foot, non-stretch tie-down straps. For kayakers is the Kayak Stacker ($60), for securing multiple kayaks on edge (nine-foot tie-down straps included). Barrecrafters also offers a unique Mini-Winch Kit ($30), a powerful tie-down tool for securing awkward multi-boat loads; and the Kayak Strap Kit ($15) including two nine-foot tie-down straps with cam buckles. All products are manufactured and assembled at Barrecrafter's Vermont factory. Info.: (802) 985-3321

Mirage Truck Racks (Jemb Rack Systems)

The Mirage is a removable sport rack for trucks. From Williston, Vt., it is referred to as "disappearing" as it folds away into its padded carrying case that fits behind the seats of your truck. The weight-to-strength ratio isn't bad either: at under 30 lbs. it can still carry 300 lbs. of gear. The Mirage (base price $299) is made from round, rustproof anodized aluminum tubes; fasteners are stainless steel-no tools required. It is a freestanding rack and is micro-adjustable in length to carry everything from playboats to racing shells. Mirage paddlesport accessories include Kayak Cushions ($22.95) and 12-foot cam straps ($14.95). Info.: (800) 272-5362 or www.rackwarehouse.com

Canyon Sports Racks

The Bedrack and new Backrack are manufactured by San Diego-based Canyon Sports Racks, and are billed as the "Simple sports rack for pickup owners." These racks are made specifically for boats, taking the guess work out for pickup-owning paddlers. The Bedrack (base price $219; includes 38" or 58" load bar and straps) sets up without tools or modifications, and breaks down to fit behind your seat when not in use. It features a black-epoxy and chrome finish that won't chip, peel or rust. The structural-steel tube frame won't flex or warp and secures to the truck bed with a four-point ratchet tie-down system. The Bedrack's round crossbars accept most Yakima accessories including Hully Rollers and Kayak Saddles. On the cab you will need a half-rack or foam blocks to secure the front of the boats; these are available through Canyon as well as other manufacturers. The Backrack Hitch-Mount Sports Rack is the trailer- hitch-mounted version of the Bedrack. With the Backrack ($219), SUV's, jeeps, station wagons, sedans and sports cars can use Canyon Sports Racks. It sets up using two self-locking steel pins and a small hitch clamp. The Backrack combines a rigid hitch mount with a two-point ratchet-action stabilizing system. Straps are included with both products. Other Canyon accessories include Bedrack Crossbar Pads ($23); Load Tie-Down Straps ($16; 12 ft.); Bow/Stern Straps ($14; 8 ft.); Foam Canoe Blocks ($14) and Kayak Saddles ($15); Foam Kayak Roof Rack ($18); Ratchet ($25, 6 ft.) and Cam ($23, 6 ft.) A 1/8-inch steel base attaches to the sides of your pick-up truck bed, and four one-inch bars fold up to create the frame and crossbars. Siderails also provide tie-down points the length of the bed.
