Analytical essay writing tricks
Analytical essays aren't as hard to write as many people think they are, but they're not entirely simple either. They do need to be organised properly or your readers will find it hard to follow your reasoning. The good news is there are a few simple tricks that will make your job much easier. Here are some of the best.
- Start by making a good outline. This will help you keep to the right structure, show you at a glance where you need to find more information and make it simple to write the final essay. There are a few stages in writing your outline:
- Start with the four standard essay headings - Introduction, Thesis, Body and Conclusion.
- Work out your thesis.
- List the points that have to be discussed to decide whether the thesis is correct or not.
- Briefly note your conclusion.
- Put the discussion points in order of importance with the most important first.
- Make notes for each discussion point. If you notice any points that don't seem to have much evidence do some extra research.
- Use multiple sources to back up your arguments. Staying with a single source makes it easy for you to be influenced by an author's bias. The best solution is to use a mix of books and online references to support your discussion. Check that all online sources you use are properly referenced.
- Develop the outline for your introduction last. This sounds slightly counter-intuitive, but there's logic in it. All the information that goes in the introduction is taken from further on in the essay, so if you do the introduction first then change your mind about something you're just going to have to go back and change it.
- Use example papers to get ideas on the best layout for your essay, and if possible for discussion points as well. Make sure to find references for any information you find in an example essay.
A good analytical essay involves some work, but using these tricks will remove all the actual difficulties from the process and make sure you write in a logical, structured way. With no worries about how to do the actual writing you can concentrate on research, and that seriously increases your chances of getting a good grade.
